Countdown to Battlestar Galactica: 1 Day

BSG is Coming is going all out on the pre-season opener hype, including full episodes, behind the scenes videos, and “the story so far” clips. There’s a lot of buzz over the fact that the writers knew going in that this would be the last season, and have crafted it accordingly to end the series on their own terms.

Edward James Olmos, who plays Adm. William Adama on SCI FI Channel’s series Battlestar Galactica told SCI FI Wire that it’s not inconceivable that all of the characters will die by the end of the upcoming fourth and final season–and that would be OK with him.

Really? Guess who this wouldn’t be okay with — millions of fans who have only one thing to look forward to after the final season ends: the BSG movies! Yes, they haven’t announced or even hinted at a movie franchise, but come on — it’s a noble sci-fi tradition, in the footsteps of Star Trek and The X-Files. BUT, if these writers can make the failure of the mission and death of the human race make sense as the logical ending to the story, I’m with Olmos — go for it.

If everyone were to die? “I think that people would be shocked, and they’d be hurt, and they would be totally, totally frustrated,” Olmos said. “But I’ve got to tell you, that’s a truth that people have to realize. We may do it to ourselves [in real life]. It all depends on us now and what choices we make.”

Point taken.

Mary McDonnell, who plays President Laura Roslin, says of the unique situation:

“I find that the energy going into the last nine [episodes] and knowing that we’re completing the telling of the story is a very unusual experience on television,” McDonnell said. “You have the choice to go ahead and finish the story, and it’s very specifically laid out to be bookended. So on that level I’m thrilled. I think it’s a great idea.”

  1. I think the old doctor is the last cylon.
